Solids, Liquids, and Gases - Science Experiment!

In one of our Science units we learned that everything we hear, see, touch, taste is made of matter. Matter can be a solid, liquid or gas and all matter takes up space. We could easily see that a solid and liquid takes up space, and to prove that air takes up space I decide to do this really cool experiment I saw on Inspire me ASAP.

What you'll need:
- water
- clear bowl
- clear plastic cup
- paper towel
- tape (to hold the paper towel in the cup)

Once you gather all the material, secure the paper towel inside the clear plastic cup with the tape, fill up the clear bowl with water. Now, it's time to have your little scientist think about what will happen next. Will the paper towel get wet or not?

Flip the cup upside down and immerse it in the water.

Hold it down to make sure it won't turn sideways.

Then, carefully pull the cup upwards and check the paper!!! WOW!!! It's not wet at all, and guess why? You just proved that air takes up space!

Cool, right?

Time to gather your little scientist and discuss some more about matter. We read the book Solids, Liquids, and Gases by Ginger Garrett and I asked V to point more examples of liquids, gases and solids that we could readily find around the house.

Hope you have a great day!
